Christian W. A. Pfirrmann MD, exec. MBA UZH
Professor Christian W. A. Pfirrmann is musculoskeletal radiologists specialized in sports injury and rheumatology at MRI Zurich. He earned his medical degree at the University of Zurich and Berne in Switzerland and received his Diagnostic Radiology training at the Kantonsspital Luzern. Following residency, he completed a clinical fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology and an additional year of training in orthopedic surgery at the Orthopedic University Hospital Balgrist. This was followed by a research fellowship at the University of California in San Diego UCSD with Don Resnick MD.
He lead the Radiology at the Orthopedic University Hospital Balgrist, University of Zurich, Switzerland as chair and was the founder of the Swiss Center for Musculoskeletal Imaging (SCMI) at the Balgrist Campus.
Dr. Pfirrmann’s main research interest is MR imaging of the hip. A special focus of the current and past research is devoted to the clinical relevance of MR imaging findings. MR imaging of the hip in the postoperative patient with the development of new metal artefact reduction techniques are in the current research focus. Imaging of athletes and imaging guided pain treatment and imaging of the spine is also an important field of Dr. Pfirrmann’s research activities.
Dr. Pfirrmann is member of the International Skeletal Society and recipient of its President Medal. He serves as reviewer and on several editorial boards for international imaging journals and is a active speaker on international scientific and educational conferences.
Dr. Pfirrmann is author of over 260 scientific papers. Over 55 papers of his papers are published in the journal Radiology. He also authored the magnetic resonance classification of lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration „Pfirrmann Classification“.
